Grind & Brew Guide

New to whole-bean coffee, or not sure which grind to pick? Here's a quick guide to getting a great cup from every Roastbloom bag.

Which grind should I choose?

Grind Best for
Whole Bean Grinding fresh at home just before brewing, for the most flavor
Coarse French press, cold brew, percolator
Standard Drip coffee makers, pour-over, AeroPress
Espresso Espresso machines and moka pots

A good starting recipe

  • Drip or pour-over: about 2 level tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 oz of water.
  • French press: coarse grind, about 2 tablespoons per 6 oz of hot water; steep 4 minutes, then press slowly.
  • Cold brew: coarse grind, 1 part coffee to 8 parts cold water; steep 12–18 hours in the fridge, then strain. Dilute to taste.
  • Espresso: follow your machine's guide; start with a fine grind and adjust.

How long does a bag last?

A 12 oz bag makes roughly 15–20 mugs, so one bag lasts about 2–3 weeks at one or two cups a day. A 1 lb bag lasts about a month.

Keeping it fresh

Store coffee in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, not the fridge. For the best flavor, enjoy it within 2–4 weeks of opening.

Brewing our teas

Tea Water Steep
Black teas (English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Masala Chai) Just off the boil 3–5 minutes
Green and jasmine teas Hot, not boiling (about 175°F) 2–3 minutes
Herbal and rooibos (Hibiscus Berry, Apple Cider Rooibos, Moroccan Mint) Boiling 5–7 minutes
Matcha About 175°F Whisk about 1 teaspoon into 2–3 oz water until frothy

Use about 1 teaspoon of loose-leaf tea per 8 oz cup and adjust to taste.
